Inroduction

Adding a new reference is a simple 4 step process starting here. After pressing the Add Reference button or selecting it from the the Action menu you are presented with a screen looking similar to this. This is page is designed to capture the essential details about the reference such as its title and the journal it came from.

Initial Display

Entering Data

All the fields are mandatory except for the end page which is optional. You may only enter digits (0 --> 9) in the following fields

If you enter an end page that is before the start page of a reference the number will be highlighted in red to indicate the fact to you. The software will not stop you entering an end date that is before the start date however. The image below shows you most of the fields now filled in with the end date highlighted red.

Journals

Notice that the Next button is not yet highlighted this is because a journal hasn't yet been selected. Journals can be selected in two ways

Using the Drop Down List

By using the drop down selection box to select a previously entered journal you can quickly assign a journal to a reference you are currently adding. Over time as you add more references you will probably find that you rarely need to add new journals. The image below shows the process of selecting a journal.

Selecting a Journal

Entering a New Journal

To enter a new journal simply press the "New Journal" button. This will present you with a new dialog box looking similar to the image below

Entering a New Journal

Simply fill in the two fields and press add to create the new journal. The "Journal Name" field is the name you want to refer to the journal by (eg Journal of Medicinal Chemistry). The "Reference Name" field is for how you would like the journal to be presented in any citations you make ( eg J.Med.Chem. ).

NOTE : If you add a new journal and then decide to add another new journal it will over write the previous new journal. In other words you can only define a single new journal per new reference added.

Completed

Once you have selected a journal you will be presented with a display similar to this. Notice that the "Next" button is now highlighted. The next and previous buttons will not be highlighted unless the data on the current page fits the requirements for the page. Try removing the start page for instance and notice how the next button greys out again.
