A few people have written and asked me about replacing torn hoses on their Dyson and up until now I have always replied personally to their request. I thought it was about time to put together a page about this problem so that I don't keep repeating myself.
A while ago ours Dyson developed a rip in the hose quite near the wand end (about 8 centimetres down) while I was cleaning the stairs. The solution I used which has worked very well for 18 months was to wrap 5 or so layers of brown packing tape round the rip. The method I used was as follows:
- Stretch the hose out a little (but not so much you make the rip worse)
- Wrap 3 to 5 layers of tape tightly round the tear going at least 4cm either side.
- Compress the hose (like it would be when stored) and hold for a minute or so. The tape should fill all the creases.
That's it job done and for the price of a roll of packing tape.
I know this sounds a bit like a bodge but I assure you it is very effective and of course very cheap. It has been suggested to me that it would be simpler to just remove the end fitting and shorten the tube a little. I tried this at first but couldn't get the end fitting off. I came to the conclusion it was glued or solvent welded to the end fitting. This wouldn't surprise me as Dyson sell the whole tube assembly as one part.
