What can I say about Star Wreck? “It’s ok I suppose” is about the best I can do. There is nothing really great about it but there isn’t anything terrible about it either. The film is a parody of Star Trek and Babylon 5 and contains all the characters you would expect to find. If you aren’t familiar with both series I’m not sure you will get that much from the film as you won’t know the characters behind it. It’s difficult to write a review of this film without giving the basis of the plot away but the ending is certainly cleverly done to ensure neither the Star Trek not the B5 camp is left upset.
The story bobbles along at about the right pace but doesn’t really captivate you. The humour is fair for the most part with a little light slapstick here and there. Perhaps some of the humour is lost in the translation to English.
The quality of the filming is supprisingly good considering it is an amature film and the graphics (which make up a good 30 to 40% of the film probably) are excellent. In particilar look out for the first jump gate sequence. I swear that is a rip from the real B5 series.
There is no dubbed English version so you are stuck with reading subtitles. Fortunatly the translation has been done exceptionally well and the subtitles themselves are clear and well presented.
Considering the film is free to download I would say give it a go. If you don’t like it you haven’t lost anything. You can grab a copy from the Star Wreck site. I suggest you get the Bit Torrent version as it is better quality than the direct download version.
