We had our first removals people round today. The first one was running late and turned up at the same time as the person doing the mortgage survey. The mortgage survey was very comprehensive – it took him almost two hours to crawl all over the house and complete the survey. It turned out he was a wood turner as well so we got on pretty well. I asked him about the broken purlin and while he was initially very wary about the idea of buying a house with such a serious structural problem when I explained the problem to him he seemed to think it wouldn’t be that much of a problem.
One thing is sure from talking to him though: we have to get a structural engineer in to do some loading calculations before we can get a mortgage on the place. That is likely to slow the whole process down so we are probably going to have to be in storage for a while.
The mortgage company were really good about the broken timber in the loft. To cut a long story short, as long as we can get buildings insurance we can get a mortgage. Getting buildings insurance might be tricky though.
