I was sitting around chatting with Fraggle the other day and we got talking about the latest thing the Government wanted to ban. It dawned on me that things were getting banned left right and centre. Just off the top of my head I could think of half a dozen things that had been banned in the very recent past. None really affected me but there seems to be a worrying trend.
Anyway this page is meant to be a tounge in cheek look at all the things that have been banned over the ages. If you have any interesting news about things that have been banned I would be happy to include them.
Note: where the entry starts with just a : (or a month) it means I don't know the exact date ban came into effect (or was lifted). If you know please tell me :o).
2007
- Summer: All smoking banned in pubs and clubs and basically all public enclosed spaces (wish they would ban it in non-enclosed spaces as well).
2006
- 21 February: A little old lady is banned from picking mushrooms in the New Forest for commerical gain. The problem here was that the little old lady was selling what she collected. The exploitation of the New Forest for commercial gain (in this way - it is run by the Foresty Commission as a commercial forst) is not something I support and I think they made the right choice in turning her out on her ear.
- 17th February: Talk of banning "love scenes" in school plays. Come on people it's not like they are making hard core porn on the stage.
- 14th February: Vote on whether to ban smoking in all enclosed public places. Vote passes with land slide victory.
2005
- February: Hunting with hounds is banned. I, like a lot of people, didn't really care about foxes getting torn to shreads by a pack of angry dogs - we just wanted to stick one to the toffs. We would probably have lost if they could have come up with an argument better than "it's the most efficient way to control foxes". Yeah, right.
- : Talk of a partial ban on smoking in pubs that serve food as per the Labout manifesto. This ends in disaster as no one can agree what that means. A free vote is discussed.
2004
2003
- : Most forms of tobacco advertising banned under Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Act.
2002
2001

1999
- 17 December: Ban on on beef on the bone lifted.
1998
1997
- 1st December: Beef on the bone banned because of mad cow disease.
1965
- : Cigarette advertising banned on TV under the Television Act 1964.
